The cover was every where on Bookstagram. All I knew about the book was 3 things: it was by Julie Kasagawa, a writer a lot of book bloggers agreed was a good writer, the setting was in Japan and one of the characters was a kitsune. Sold.
Julie Kasagawa did not let me down.
This book might as well have on the cover “THIS IS A BOOK WRITTEN FOR SAMANTHA” because it’s everything I like – shinobi, kitsune, Japanese folklore. If you’ve been on my blog for a year now then you should know by now that I’m obsessed with Naruto. (Kakashi is my favorite shinobi.) I am 50 pages in and loving the layers to this story, each character like it’s own main character. I can’t help but see these characters in popular Japanese culture – the spider demon you fight in Dark Souls, the description of the kitsune looks like Ahri from League of Legends, and mention of Shinobi, demon swords, and Kage makes my Naruto-heart fill with joy. What a treat this book is for anime fans like me.
I will post an official review at the end of the month. This is Hyla Brook Books book pick. If you don’t know, Hyla Brook Books is my book shop. I like to see my etsy shop like a book shop that one day you can actually walk into, a store with coffee and books and poetry. I came up with the idea for a book club since I wanted to make friends, and when i think about it, I’ve been in book clubs since elementary school. Hyla Brook Books meets in my Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/392158451499790/?source_id=111228720220970
I’m going to be up tonight reading up a couple of chapters before bedtime. What are you reading this month? Let me know if you join my facebook group in a comment below!
I really enjoyed this book and – slight spoiler – I loved the second even more.
